Heavy Lifting: Bisons Test in the Weight Room

Braden Rubey hang cleaned a team-best 353 pounds.

SEARCY – Harding's returning football players posted some impressive weight-room numbers Friday and Saturday in the lifting portion of Bison strength coach Clay Beason's Iron Bison Test. Players tested in the bench press and the hang clean.

The hang clean refers to the lifter explosively pulling the weight from the floor to a racked position across deltoids and collar bones.

Among the linemen, senior defensive tackle John Ikahihifo and senior defensive end Mark Gutierrez-Durant stood out. Ikahihifo bench pressed 480 pounds, while Gutierrez-Durant pressed 225 pounds 38 times. Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jeremiah Vivio led the linemen with a 328-pound clean.

In the combo category (offensive backs and linebackers), linebacker Russ Jenkins did 22 reps of the 225-pound bench press. Sophomore linebacker Aaron Gillaspie cleaned 327 pounds.

Junior wide receiver Tyler O'Quin did 21 reps of 225 pounds to lead the skill-position players in the bench press. Junior defensive back Braden Rubey cleaned a team-best 353 pounds.

The team conducted the conditioning part of the Iron Bison Test on Sunday night. Results will be available later.
