SEARCY – Central Arkansas junior Frederick Campbell made his only three-point shot of the game with seven seconds left to lift the Bears to a 70-69 win over Harding, Monday in Gulf South Conference play at the Rhodes Field House.
Harding (9-5, 1-3) took the lead with 32 seconds remaining on an Alassane Savadogo layup. Savadogo scored a career-high 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
It looked as if Harding had forced a turnover on UCA’s final possession, but senior Darryl Jones recovered a loose ball and found Campbell on the right baseline for the game-winner. The Bisons pushed the ball down the floor but had the ball knocked away before they got a shot off.
Both teams shot poorly in the first half and the Bisons clung to a 32-31 lead at the break. The lead changed hands 11 times in the second half.
Harding shot 59% from the field in the second half, but shot only 1-of-4 from the foul line. The Bisons did not attempt a free throw in the game’s final 18 minutes. Central Arkansas (11-4, 4-1) shot 54% and made 7-of-10 from the stripe.
Senior Lonnie Smith led the Bisons with 17 points, shooting 6-for-6 from the foul line, and tied a season-high with six rebounds. Patrick Andrepont added 11 points. Ceso Sprewell scored eight and led the team with seven rebounds.
Jones scored a team-high 16 points for Central Arkansas. Aubrey Bruner had 15 points, hitting four of UCA’s eight three-pointers. Lamar Phillips scored 12 points, but shot only 5-of-17 from the field.
Harding looks to end a two-game conference skid Thursday against Christian Brothers in Memphis.
