Christian Brothers Upends the Bisons, 70-68

MEMPHIS, TENN. – Two key blocks by Christian Brothers in the final minute gave the Buccaneers a 70-68 win over Harding, Thursday night in Gulf South Conference play at Canale Arena.
 
With 20 seconds remaining and Harding trailing 69-68, CBU’s Nick Kohs blocked a Lonnie Smith layup that gave the Bucs the ball back. Following a Kevin Weybright free throw, the Bisons’ were foiled again on a Weybright block with one second remaining that sealed the win for Christian Brothers.
 
Harding (9-6, 1-4) dropped its third straight conference game and had a three-game winning streak against Christian Brothers snapped.
 
Christian Brothers (9-6, 3-2) moved into third place in the GSC West Division with the victory.
 
The lead changed hands 28 times in the game, including 15 times in the second half.
 
Smith, a senior from Hughes, Ark., led the Bisons with 23 points, hitting 4-of-8 from the three-point line. Senior Ceso Sprewell collected his second double-double in six games with 11 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore Jacob Thies added a career-high 11 points.
 
Weybright led Christian Brothers with 24 points, and freshman Nick Kohs had 15 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Kohs added a team-high seven assists.
 
Harding entered the game with a -9 rebounding margin in GSC games and struggled again Thursday. Christian Brothers outrebounded the Bisons 36-28 and had 16 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second-chance points.
 
The Bisons had their second straight strong shooting game, hitting 47% for the game.
 
Harding’s next action is Monday when it hosts Ouachita Baptist at the Rhodes Field House.
