RUSSELLVILLE, ARK. – Arkansas Tech senior Katie McCormick hit a left-handed layup with 7.1 seconds remaining to give the Golden Suns a 73-72 victory over Harding, Thursday night at Tucker Coliseum. It was Arkansas Tech’s 23rd straight win over the Lady Bisons in Russellville.
Harding (8-10, 0-7) took a one-point lead with 28 seconds remaining on Kinsey Tucker’s layup. Arkansas Tech’s Christy Mahan then found McCormick in the paint for the game winner.
Arkansas Tech (10-8, 2-5) nailed a school-record 14 three-pointers in the game, including eight in the second half. It was the most three-pointers by a team in the Gulf South Conference this season.
Harding junior Chelsea Simpson had a career night for the Lady Bisons. The Byng, Okla., native scored a career-high 28 points on 9-of-13 shooting, made all 10 of her free throw attempts, and grabbed 11 rebounds. Junior Jasmine McClindon scored 18 points and Tucker had 10.
Freshman Catherine McMenamy added eight points, 10 rebounds, and a team-high six assists for Harding.
Arkansas Tech led much of the first half, but did not score a field goal in the period’s final 6:30, and the game was tied 36-36 at halftime.
The lead changed hands eight times in the second half.
Golden Sun Melanie Pierce scored a team-high 15 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals.
Harding is back in action Saturday at the Rhodes Field House against Henderson State.
