AUSTIN, TEXAS – Playing in near freezing temperatures, Harding’s baseball team earned a split in a non-conference doubleheader Friday against St. Edward’s. Harding used extra innings to win the opener 7-5 but had only one hit in game two and lost 6-1. The two teams are scheduled to complete the series Saturday.
With the score tied 5-5 at the end of the scheduled seven innings, Harding sophomore Jon David Glenn drove in the eventual game-winning run with his third hit of the game in the top of the ninth. Glenn later scored an insurance run on Bo Whitaker’s infield single.
Harding junior Justin Phillips (2-0) entered the game in the sixth in relief of starter Mike Davis with the Bisons ahead 5-3, but Phillips could not hold the lead. St. Edward’s scored two in the seventh to push the game into extra innings. Phillips allowed only two hits the rest of the way to become the first Harding pitcher with two wins this season. David Wagner (0-2) suffered the loss for the Hilltoppers.
Glenn and Zach Fisher each drove in two runs for Harding. St. Edward’s reserve rightfielder Daniel Carnline had three of the Hilltoppers’ 13 hits.
Harding’s lone hit in game two came in the fourth inning. Fisher walked to lead off the inning, and Glenn singled him around to third. Fisher scored on Adam Darby’s infield groundout.
