HU Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader over Evangel

SEARCY, ARK. – Harding took both games of a doubleheader over Evangel on Saturday at Jerry Moore Field. The Bisons downed the Crusaders 9-3 in the opener and had a dramatic 8-7 come-from-behind win in game two. The victories improved Harding’s record to 3-0. Evangel fell to 0-2.
 
Game One
Sophomore Jon David Glenn collected a career-high four hits, scored twice, and drove in two more to lead Harding to a 9-3 win in the opener.
 
The Bisons had 13 hits as a team and scored at least one run in each of the first six innings. Devin Watts, Clint Williams, and Blake Robertson each had a pair of hits.
 
Sophomore lefthander Kenny Barnett (1-0) earned the win in his first collegiate outing. He struck out six and allowed three hits and three runs (two earned) over 4.0 innings. Barnett missed each of the last two seasons with arm injuries.
 
Junior Jeff Davis came on in relief of Barnett and pitched 3.0 scoreless innings to record his first career save.
 
Chris Gerelman (0-1) suffered the loss for Evangel, surrendering 10 hits and seven runs over 3.1 innings. Bill Mulholland and Zach Justice had two hits each for the Crusaders. Evangel had only six hits in the game.
 
Game Two
Harding freshman Danny Bryant drove in the tying and winning runs on an 0-2 count with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. His line drive single to left scoring Devin Watts and Jon David Glenn gave the Bisons an 8-7 win in game two.
 
Harding trailed 7-3 after a disastrous sixth inning in which Evangel scored seven runs, six unearned, on three Bison errors. But Harding responded with five runs in the seventh with Bryant and Watts each driving in two runs.
 
Sophomore Brandon Brock (1-0) collected his second career win with 2.0 innings of relief. Junior starter Justin Phillips struck out eight and allowed only two hits in 5.0 innings.
 
Reliever Andy Hanson (0-1) took the loss for Evangel.
 
Both teams had only five hits each in the game. Watts went 2-for-2 and drove in three for the Bisons. Justin Smith had two hits and drove in two for the Crusaders.
 
Harding is back in action Tuesday in a single, non-conference game against Arkansas-Monticello.
