RUSSELLVILLE, ARK. – Harding rolled to victory in its first Gulf South Conference women’s tennis Thursday with a 9-0 win at Arkansas Tech. It was the Lady Bisons’ fifth straight victory and 12th in its last 13. Harding improved to 15-3 overall, while Arkansas Tech fell to 4-17 overall and 0-3 in the GSC.
Harding, ranked seventh in the NCAA II South Region rankings, won all but two games in the three doubles matches. Karina Gomes and Catherine Carui at No. 2 ran their winning streak to 11 straight matches, and the No. 1 team of Alicia Williams and Milena Chisaca won their 10th straight.
Three of the six singles matches were shutouts. Gomes extended her singles winning streak, blanking Puja Paul 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 for her 12th consecutive victory. The closest match was at No. 6, where Catrina Kelly held off Micah Higgins 6-3, 6-4.
The victory gave Harding head coach David Elliott 998 career wins. He will look for 999 when the Lady Bisons host 30th-ranked Central Arkansas on Friday in Gulf South Conference action.
