MONTICELLO, ARK. – Arkansas-Monticello’s strong starting pitching continued Saturday as Boll Weevil starter Daniel Howard limited Harding to only one run on seven hits as UAM took the series finale 8-1.
The two teams split Friday’s games with Harding opening the first game with seven runs in the first inning. From that point on, Arkansas-Monticello’s staff limited the Bisons to only one earned run over the next 24 innings.
Arkansas-Monticello (25-17, 7-13 Gulf South Conference) led 1-0 after four innings but broke the game open with three runs off Harding starter Kenny Barnett (3-4) in the fifth. Barnett lasted 4.2 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits.
The Boll Weevils added a run on a Josh Mace RBI double in the sixth and three more, only one of them earned, in the seventh of Bison reliever Mike Davis.
Harding (19-24, 4-14) scored its only run in the eighth when Jimmy Sisk lined his first double of the season down the left field line and came around to score on Zach Fisher’s single to center.
The Bisons’ defense had three more errors Saturday, giving them nine for the series. Arkansas-Monticello scored 10 unearned runs in the series’ final two games.
Harding freshman catcher Ryan Moody went 2-for-4, giving him his fourth two-hit game in his last six outings. He has batted .474 (9-for-19) during that stretch.
Cody Tornberg led Arkansas-Monticello, going 3-for-5, including a double.
The Bisons are back in action Tuesday with a single, nine-inning, non-conference game at Central Arkansas in Conway.
