CANYON, Texas – The Harding volleyball team started the season with two wins at the West Texas A&M Tournament in Canyon, Texas. The Lady Bisons defeated Bemidji State in three games (30-18, 30-15, 30-27) and New Mexico Highlands in four (30-24, 26-30, 30-23, 30-26). The wins mark Harding’s fifth straight season to open with a victory.
The Lady Bisons were led by sophomore Katelin Parks with a total of 30 kills between the two matches. Seniors Tiffany Morrison and Katie Westmoreland had 18 and 17 kills respectively on the day. Sophomore Leah Tepe notched 70 assists and six service aces for Harding. Joining this year’s returners was freshman Sarah Phipps with nine kills versus New Mexico Highlands.
Harding started out game one versus Bemidji with no errors and a .457 hitting percentage but leveled out for a .259 attack percentage in the first match. The Lady Bisons hit barely higher than New Mexico Highlands (.146) but totaled 12 blocks in the match. Shellie Rummer took over at the net with six block assists and one solo block for Harding.
The West Texas A&M Tournament will continue tomorrow (Aug. 26) with Harding playing Dallas Baptist at 3:00 p.m. and the host West Texas A&M at 7:00 p.m.
