SPRINGFIELD, MO. – Drury University’s Chris Anzalone scored the game-winning goal in the 30th minute to lead the Panthers to a 2-1 win over Harding on Friday in non-conference men’s soccer action. It was the season opener for both teams.
Drury’s Nick Washam opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finding the net from five yards out on an assist from Kyle Hogge.
Harding (0-1) tied the game only five minutes later. Junior forward Brock Williams, back with the Bisons after a year away, scored the club’s first goal of the season on a penalty kick. It was his ninth career goal.
Anzalone’s goal then came from 10 yards out to give Drury its second straight win over Harding. The Panthers won last year’s season opener 2-0 in Searcy. It was the Bisons’ sixth straight loss in an opener.
Drury out-shot Harding 15-2 in the game. The Bisons did not manage a shot in the second half. Other than Williams’ penalty kick, only sophomore Tristan Grant had another attempt at goal.
Sophomore Ryan Hamilton and freshman James Thurmond split time in goal for the Bisons. Hamilton gave up both goals in the first half and had two saves. Thurmond had two stops in the second half.
Harding is back in action on Sunday against the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Rivermen were 3-2 winners over Lyon College on Friday.
