SEARCY – Harding University junior forward Kendyl Washburn scored twice and assisted on a third goal as Harding defeated Montevallo 3-0 Friday. The game was the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams.
Harding (2-2-3, 1-0-0) got on the board in the ninth minute. Washburn carried the ball down the right side and fired a shot that Montevallo goalkeeper Corey Gros deflected across the front of the goal. Junior Elyssa Currie collected the rebound and fired home her first goal of the season. It would eventually become her second career game-winning goal.
In the 35th minute, Washburn took a through-ball on the right side from midfielder Sarah Williamson and dribbled past two defenders before beating Gros to the far post to give Harding a 2-0 lead. Williamson made her return to the lineup after missing her last two games with a hamstring injury. The goal was Washburn’s third of the season and 27th of her career, moving into a tie with Andrea Richmond for third all-time at Harding.
Montevallo (2-5-0, 0-1-0) managed only four shots in the first half and seven in the game. The loss snapped the Falcons two-game winning streak.
Washburn struck again with four minutes left in the game. A Montevallo defender fouled Washburn at the top of the circle. Her ensuing free kick slid just inside the right post. It gave Washburn her sixth career multi-goal game.
Harding freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Hornbeck recorded her second shutout in the last three games and made four saves in the game.
The Lady Bisons held a 16-7 shot advantage in the game.
Harding is back in action on Sunday against 16th-ranked West Florida. The game begins at 1 p.m., at the HU Soccer Field.
