SEARCY – West Florida scored four second half goals to defeat the Harding men’s soccer team 5-1, Sunday in Gulf South Conference action. The 12th-ranked Argos outshot the Bisons 22-5.
West Florida (8-1-1, 2-0-0), the preseason GSC favorite, took an early 1-0 lead on Eduardo Oliviera’s goal in the 12th minute. It was the only Argo goal in the first 45 minutes despite an 11-2 shot advantage.
UWF then poured it on in the second half. Mason Hupp and Jimmy Henry, both of whom had two assists in the game, scored soon after the break. Alvaro Franco added a pair of late goals for the Argos.
Harding (0-8-0, 0-2-0) is now winless in its last 15 outings, dating back to last season. The Bisons averted the shutout with a goal by Brock Williams in the game’s final minute. Senior Daniel Graves found Williams on a free kick. The goal was his team-leading fifth of the season. It was Graves’ second career assist.
Harding was to play Freed-Hardeman on Tuesday in Searcy, but that game has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict. The Bisons next meet Delta State on Sept. 29 in Cleveland, Miss. Harding’s last win was a 4-3 overtime victory over Delta State last season.
