SEARCY, Ark. – The Bison baseball team notched two more wins onto its record by defeating Southwest Baptist on Saturday with scores of 6-0 and 5-4, at Jerry Moore Field. Harding improved to 5-1 on the season and Southwest Baptist's opening weekend dropped them to 0-2. Bison starter Justin Phillips (2-0) proved himself once again with eight strikeouts in his complete game shutout.
Junior Adam Darby went 4-for-4 on the day including a double in the second game for the Bisons. Bo Whitaker was also clutch at the plate with Harding's first homerun of the season. As a team, the Bisons had nine hits and no errors in the first game. Zane Montgomery suffered the first loss for the Bearcats, giving up all six of Harding's runs – four of which were earned. Montgomery hit six batters which tied him for third place in NCAA II history for most hit batters in one game.
The Bisons managed only four hits in the second game and had three fielding errors, compared to SBU's seven hits and one error. Reliever Jeff Davis (2-0) took the win for the Bisons on two and a third innings and Aaron Davidson grabbed his second save on the season. James Ledford dropped the loss for the Bearcats with five innings of work and four earned runs.
Harding's 5-1 record is the best start for the Bisons since 2002 when they began the season with one loss and eight wins.
The Bisons take to the field again on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 1:00 p.m., against Lyon at Jerry Moore Field.
