HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Harding baseball team came up short by one run in both games of a doubleheader against Alabama-Huntsville at Joe Davis Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers pulled out 3-2 and 6-5 wins to drop the Bisons to 10-4 overall. UAH improved to 10-5.
The Bisons were tied at 2-2 with the Chargers after seven innings in the first game. The top of the eighth (extra innings) did not produce any hits or runs for the Bisons. Alabama-Huntsville took advantage of two hits and a hit-by-pitch to score the only run it needed in the bottom of the inning, notching the win, 3-2.
Kyle Dempsey (1-1) took the win for the Chargers for one inning of work. Justin Phillips (3-1) pitched the complete game for the Bisons and suffered his first loss of the season. Phillips struck out six batters and allowed two earned runs. Adam Darby was 2-for-4 at the plate for Harding with an RBI. Will Evans also had a team-high two hits for UAH. The Bisons totaled four hits while the Chargers managed six.
Harding held the lead 5-4 until the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game. A hit and an error allowed the Chargers to go ahead on two unearned runs.
Charger pitcher Jacob Wray (1-0) pitched the last five innings and claimed the win for UAH. Wray allowed one run (earned) and struck out four batters. Gilbert Tellez (0-1) pitched the last inning for the Bisons and took the loss.
Five Harding players got hits in the second game, including Adam Darby with his second homerun of the year. Ryan Moody's single scored a team-high two runners. Once again, Will Evans led the Chargers with 3-for-4 hits with a total of five on the day. Alabama-Huntsville worked the plate more than the Bisons in the second game with 11 hits to Harding's five.
Harding had one error in each game and Alabama-Huntsville had two in each game.
The Bisons take on Alabama-Huntsville again tomorrow (Sunday) for another doubleheader to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Joe Davis Stadium.
