HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Junior forward Stacey Owens scored 20 points to lead Harding past Alabama-Huntsville 81-78 Saturday night in Huntsville, Ala. The win marks the second straight season the Lady Bisons have started 3-0.
Harding led the majority of the first half until Alabama-Huntsville mounted a comeback and tied the game 39-39 with four minutes remaining before the break. A three-pointer by senior guard Ashley Boykin allowed UAH to jump out to a 52-41 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Lady Bisons began to cut into the Lady Charger lead. A fastbreak layup by Leah Fugett got the Lady Bisons within five but UAH quickly bounced back on another three-pointer by Boykin. Harding slowly edged their way back into the contest on a three-pointer by Catherine McMenamy which tied the game 64 all with 9:02 left in the game. The Lady Bisons increased their lead to seven with 3:32 left. A late surge by the Lady Chargers tied up the game with 53 seconds remaining. Harding hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Four Harding players ended the game with double figures. Sophomore guard Makala McNair had 12 points for the Lady Bisons. Senior forward Ashley Anderson and McMenamy each added 11 points to Harding's total. Owens led the Lady Bisons on the boards grabbing 11.
Boykin led all scoring with 30 points hitting 9-of-14 behind the three-point line. Senior forward Kristen Banes added 17 points and led the Lady Chargers in rebounds with seven.
Harding will open at home Tuesday as they host Central Baptist at 5:30 p.m. in the Rhodes Field House.
