SEARCY — Junior Stacey Owens scored 26 points to help the Harding Lady Bisons remain undefeated with a 94-67 victory over Alabama-Huntsville at Rhodes Field House on Saturday night.

Owens made 11-of-15 shots, including three three-pointers. Sophomore Makala McNair added 16 points for Harding (8-0).

In the Lady Bisons' first meeting with Alabama-Huntsville (1-7) this season, Harding fell behind early and spent most of the game playing catchup before finally winning 81-78. On Saturday, Harding had little trouble scoring early. The Lady Bisons opened the game with an 18-3 lead in the first seven minutes.

Harding led 42-25 at halftime.

Harding coach Tim Kirby said taking a week off from games helped his team regain focus and play well against Alabama-Huntsville. The Lady Bisons last played Dec. 6 in a 91-87 victory over St. Edward's and had six full practices before Saturday.

“I thought this was as good a time as any because we had played a lot of games,” Kirby said. “There was a lot of stuff we need to get better at, especially rebounding, intensity, defensive stance. Everything we talked about before the beginning of the season, you kind of lose when you play that many games in a row.”

The Lady Bisons shot 33 of 71 from the floor (46.5 percent), while Alabama-Huntsville was only 23 of 62 (37.1 percent). Harding also built its lead off free throws; the Lady Bisons made 18-of-21 (85.7 percent).

Sophomore Leah Fugett scored 10 points and had six rebounds for Harding. Senior Ashley Anderson led the team with eight rebounds.

“That was probably Leah's best all-around game for us,” Kirby said. “Defensively, she battled. She made some big plays when we needed it. ... She created something off the dribble to give someone a layup, or she took it in for the basket herself.”

The Lady Bisons will host Incarnate Word on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
