Defense Key as Volleyball Rolls Past UAM

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Harding volleyball team had a season high 88 digs to stay undefeated in Gulf South Conference play Tuesday as they defeated Arkansas-Monticello 3-1. It is the 14th straight win for Harding. The Lady Bisons move to 17-2 on the season and 4-0 in the GSC West Division.

The Lady Bisons had a slow start in set one falling behind 7-1. Harding battled their way back in it tying the set 19-19 but UAM (7-12, 2-2 GSC West) went on a 6-3 run to take the first set 25-22.

Both Teams battled in the second set until Harding broke out and went on a 7-0 run to go up 13-7. The Lady Bisons only allowed the Blossoms to score five more points as Harding went on a 12-5 run and took the last seven points for the set two win, 25-12.

Harding jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead in the third set on three straight service aces by Samantha Anderson. The Blossoms tried to rally back but the Lady Bisons defense led Harding to a 25-16 set win.

The Lady Bisons again found themselves behind to start the fourth set but Harding rallied to pull the set tied, 14-14. Arkansas-Monticello took a 20-15 lead on three HU errors but The Lady Bisons fought  back and went on a 12-5 run to take the win.

Harding's defense had five players in double-figure digs. Leading the way was junior Emily Tate who had 25. Senior outside hitter Sarah Phipps had a career high 19 digs in the match and picked up a double-double with 10 kills. Junior setter Jessica Heimrich had 14 digs and 40 assists for the Lady Bisons. Senior Manuela Nesheva also had a double-double, leading the Harding offense with 27 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Amber Parker added 12 digs to the Harding total.

Arkansas-Monticello was led by Sara Kindred who had 10 kills and 14 digs. Vikki Crisco had a team leading 19 digs in the contest.

Harding's defense held UAM to a .112 hitting percentage. The Lady Bisons had a season high 61 kills in the match and hit for a .227 hitting percentage.

The Lady Bisons travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., on Thursday to face the other undefeated team in GSC West Division Henderson State at 7 p.m.
