SEARCY – The Harding volleyball will host the 2009 Gulf South Conference Tournament Friday and Saturday in the Rhodes Field House. Harding will face East Division foe Valdosta State in the opening round Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Bisons are the number one seed in the West Division and have a 27-6 overall record.
The two teams met earlier this season in Orlando, Fla., as the Lady Bisons walked away with a close 3-2 victory. Harding has a 3-0 series lead over Valdosta State.
Harding is led by senior outside hitter Manuela Nesheva who just received West Division Player of the Year honors. Nesheva averages 4.43 kills per set, ranking her second in the GSC and sixth in NCAA Division II. Earlier this season, she broke the all-time kill's record at Harding with 2,131.
The Lady Bisons defense has lead them through the season averaging 16.66 digs per set, ranking second in the GSC. Leading the way is junior Emily Tate who averages 4.74 digs per set, ranking her second in the GSC. She also leads the GSC in services aces per set averaging 0.51.
Valdosta State (15-12) is led by Irene Hannan who leads the team in kills and digs, averaging 3.34 kills per set and 3.35 digs per set.
North Alabama and Arkansas-Monticello will kick off the tournament at noon on Friday.
