SEARCY – The Harding baseball team received an outstanding starting pitching effort and some timely hitting by the offense in game one, but struggled out of the bullpen and at the plate in game two, splitting a doubleheader with Augustana on Opening Day of the 2009 season. The Bisons won the opener 9-3 and dropped game two 9-7 to the Vikings, a school located in Sioux Falls, S.D. The finale of the three-game series is Wednesday at noon at Jerry Moore Field.
Junior right-hander Troy Keith (1-0) pitched 5.2 innings and allowed only one earned run to win the opener. Senior J.D. Glenn, redshirt freshman Kevin Ganus and junior Will McDonald each had three hits as the Bisons pounded out 14 base knocks in the seven-inning game. Ganus homered in his first collegiate at bat and added a single and a double. McDonald hit his fourth career home run, a two-run shot, and Glenn had three singles and drove in three runs.
Harding (1-1) had a 6-3 lead after five innings of game two, but Augustana (3-2) got a three-run home run from sophomore Nate Baumann off Bison reliever Shane Bishop in the sixth inning, and the Vikings tacked on another to take a 7-6 lead.
The Bisons tied the game on a Viking error in the bottom of the sixth, but Augustana scored two more runs in the top of the seventh for the victory. Harding reliever D.A. Kremer (0-1) hit one batter and walked another before two straight Augustana hitters laced run-scoring singles.
Harding had only four hits in the second game, none off reliever Jeff Green (1-0) who pitched 2.2 innings. Brodie Brumley started the second game for the Bisons and pitched well, allowing three earned runs in 4.2 innings and striking out six.
Ganus had a double, and Adam Darby added a triple for Harding. Josh Creveling drove in two runs with infield ground outs.
