Volleyball Takes First Two at UAH Invitational

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Harding volleyball team swept through the first round of the Alabama-Huntsville Invitational Friday defeating host team Alabama-Huntsville 3-0 and Newberry College 3-0. The Lady Bisons move to 10-2 on the season and pushed their winning streak to seven games.

In the first match against Alabama-Huntsville, Harding struggled out of the gate in the first set falling behind 8-5 but the Lady Bisons rallied back to take a 17-15 lead and didn't look back, taking set one 25-23. In the second set Harding jumped out to an 11-3 lead and went on to take the set 25-14. The Lady Bisons took a quick 21-10 lead in set three. UAH rallied back taking six straight points to come within six of Harding but the Lady Bisons put the set away on three straight kills.

Freshman middle blocker Reagan Smith lead Harding with a career high 14 kills. Senior Manuela Nesheva was the other Lady Bison in double figure kills with 11. Junior Emily Tate led Harding on defense with 13 digs.

As a team, Harding hit for a season high .330 percentage, connecting 47 of 106 attempts with a season low 12 errors.   

In the second match against Newberry College, Harding went up early 7-2 and didn't look back taking the first set 25-16. In the second set, both teams exchanged points until Harding had three straight kills to take a 15-13 lead. Newberry battled back to tie the set 19-19 but Lady Bison outside hitter Sarah Phipps had two kills to take set two 25-22. The teams duplicated what they did in set two. The Lady Bisons ran away on a seven point run to take the set, 25-16.

Harding had three players in double figures kills. Leading the way was Manuela Nesheva who had 18 kills. Phipps contributed 12 and Samantha Anderson had 10. The Lady Bisons also had three players in double figure digs. Leading the way was Emily Tate who had 16 digs. Amber Parker added 12 and Jessica Heimrich had 10.

In the final day of the UAH Invitational, Harding will face West Georgia at 11:30 a.m., and Montevallo at 2 p.m.
