DENTON, Texas – The Harding volleyball team took the first two matches of the Texas Woman's Tournament on Friday beating Southwestern Oklahoma and Texas A&M-Kingsville by a score of 3-1. The Lady Bisons move to 6-2 on the season.
In the Southwestern Oklahoma match, Harding had a season high 80 digs. Four players ended with double-digit digs. Junior Emily Tate and Sophomore Amber Parker each had 16 while seniors Manuela Nesheva and Sarah Phipps ended the match with a double-double each picking up 13 digs for the Lady Bisons. Nesheva had 15 kills and Phipps had 14 to end the match. Sophomore middle blocker Alex Smith had a .500 hitting percentage killing 12 of 20 attempts with two errors.
Harding hit for a season high percentage .220. The Lady Bisons held Bulldogs to hitting only .108.
In the second match of the day against Texas A&M-Kingsville, Harding took the first two sets, 25-13 and 25-20. Kingsville battled back to take set three 25-21 but the Lady Bisons quickly jumped back to take set four and the match, 25-22. It was the first time this season Kingsville has lost.
Nesheva and Phipps both captured a double-double in the match. Nesheva had 18 kills and 10 digs while Phipps had 13 kills and 12 digs. Harding continued solid defensive play with four players in double figure digs. Leading the way was junior Emily Tate with 23.
Sophomore Jessica Heimrich had a career high 42 assists in the match. It is the second time this season Heimrich has had over 40 assists in a match.
The Lady Bisons will conclude the Texas Woman's Tournament on Saturday facing East Central Oklahoma at Noon and host team Texas Woman's at 5 p.m.
