FLORENCE, Ala. – The Lady Bison defense couldn't stop the overpowering West Florida offense Saturday in the final round of the North Alabama Tournament as the Harding volleyball team fell 3-0. The Lady Bisons fall to 5-7 overall.
Harding stayed with West Florida (6-4) midway through the first set but a 6-1 run put the Argonauts up 17-12. West Florida didn't look back, taking the first set 25-15.
In the second set, the Harding defense forced three straight errors to put the Lady Bisons up 11-8. Harding had a 14-13 lead until the Argos went on a 5-0 run to go up 18-14. The Lady Bisons slowly battled their way back into the set as they tied West Florida 24-24. Harding took a one point lead and looked to take the set when freshman outside hitter Mollie Arnold blocked a West Florida attack. A timeout by the Argos allowed West Florida to regroup. Out of the timeout, West Florida tied the match 25-25 on a kill by Jamie Nichols. A ball handling error by the Argos allowed Harding to take a one point lead and the chance to take the set for the second time. The West Florida offense went on a 3-0 run to take the set, 28-26.
West Florida jumped out a 9-2 lead in the third set. The Harding defense allowed the Lady Bisons to get back into the set, forcing four errors to come with three, 13-10. West Florida went on a 7-0 run to go up 20-10. Harding battled back but it was too late as West Florida took the set, 25-18.
Harding was led by senior middle blocker Samantha Anderson who had eight kills.
West Florida held Harding to 28 kills on 109 attempts with 19 hitting errors for a .083 hitting percentage. It was the third straight game Harding has hit under .100.
Chelsea Wilhoite and Kara Gonzalez each had 10 kills for West Floirda.
Harding had eight blocks in the match.
Harding will play their first home game and open Gulf South Conference play Tuesday, as they host Southern Arkansas at 7 p.m., in Searcy at the Rhodes Field House.
