SEARCY – The Harding women's soccer defense played 90 good minutes but a mental error in overtime allowed Cassie Wilcox's free kick to find the back of the net as the Lady Bisons fell to Faulkner 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. Harding falls to 1-4-1 overall.
A little over a minute into overtime, the Eagles (8-1) received a free kick just outside the box. The Harding defense waited for a whistle but by rule the team with the free kick can just set the ball and go. That's what Faulkner did, catching the Harding defense off-guard for the game winning goal.
The Lady Bisons got on the board first when senior midfielder Meghan Przeczewski found junior forward Chelsea Brandon in the right corner. Brandon hit a curving lob to the top left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
Senior midfielder Brianna Meek had a scoring opportunity with seven minutes left in the first half when she received a pass from Brandon but the shot hit the middle of the crossbar.
Faulkner had three breakaway opportunities in the first half but Harding senior goalkeeper Chelsea Hornbeck made the save each time to keep the Lady Bisons on top.
Harding took the lead into halftime.
In the 57th minute the Eagles got the equalizer when Laura Kramer found the top right corner of the net to tie the game 1-1.
Faulkner had 11 scoring chances after their goal but the Harding defense forced eight of them off frame.
With 45 seconds remaining in regulation, Harding had a great chance for the game winner when junior forward Paola Eusse got past the Eagles defense but the shot went inches left of goal.
Hornbeck had eight saves in the game; six were in the first half.
The Lady Bisons will be back in action Tuesday as they travel to Tahlequah, Okla., to face Northeastern State at 2 p.m.
