MEMPHIS – Great defense allowed the Harding volleyball team to pick up their second Gulf South Conference victory Thursday night after defeating Christian Brothers 3-0. The Lady Bisons move to 7-8 on the season and 2-1 in the GSC West Division.
Four Lady Bisons ended with double-figure digs, leading the way was senior defensive specialist Emily Tate who had 21. It was the 21st time in her career she has had over 20 digs in a game. Sophomore Weslynn Williams ended with a career-high 13 digs in the match. Sophomore setter Amber Schinzing added 12 and freshman outside hitter Mollie Arnold added 11.
The Harding defense held Christian Brothers (8-10 and 2-1 in the GSC West Division) to 35 kills in the match.
The Harding offense also had multiple players with double-figure kills, leading the way was Arnold who had 12. Sophomore outside hitter Reagan Smith ended with 11 kills and junior middle-blocker Alex Smith tied a season high with 10 kills.
Early in the first set, Harding took a 3-2 lead but Christian Brothers stayed close until midway through the set when the Lady Bisons went on a 7-3 run to take a 19-13 lead. The Lady Bucs tried to rally but the Lady Bisons scored the last five points to take set one 25-15.
Tied 14-14 in the second set, a Lady Bucs service error gave the Lady Bisons the momentum as they went on a 6-1 run to take a 20-15 lead. Harding didn't look back taking set two 25-21.
Harding jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the third set but Christian Brothers put together a four point rally to come within one. The Lady Bisons answered back with a three-point run to lead 16-12 lead. Christian Brothers battled back once again to pull within one and kept it close but Harding took the set 25-23.
Christian Brothers was led by Michelle Hein who had eight kills and 10 digs for the Lady Bucs.
Harding will be back in action next Tuesday as they host Arkansas-Monticello at 7 p.m., in the Rhodes Field House.
