TOPEKA, Kan. – The Harding volleyball team went 1-1 in the opening round of the Washburn Fall Classic on Friday. The Lady Bisons defeated Missouri Western State 3-0 but fell to Truman State 3-1.
Harding (14-5) opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Missouri Western.
As a team, the Lady Bisons hit for .282 and were led by junior outside hitter Mollie Arnold who had 19 kills. The Harding defense was led by Lisa Copeland who had 14 digs. Sophomore Taryn Eubank and freshman Shelby Daniel both had 10 digs for HU.
Missouri Western (9-8) was led by Amanda Boender who had 10 kills.
In the second match of the day, Harding dropped the first two sets, 26-24 and 25-22, but battled back to take the third, 28-26. The Lady Bisons were tied at 21 in the fourth set until Truman State won the next four points on three-straight kills.
For the second time this season, Mollie Arnold had over 20 kills in a match. Arnold, who hit for a .320 hitting percentage, had 21 kills and a team-high 19 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Marindia Turner had 11 kills.
The Bulldogs (14-4) had three players with 10 or more kills – Allie Brak (18), Megan Sharpe (15) and Emily Briseno (10). Truman State ended the game with a .269 hitting percentage. Abby Moser led the TSU defense with 25 digs.
Both teams had eight service aces in the match. Senior setter Amber Schinzing led HU with three. It was the third time this season she has had over three aces in a match.
Harding will be back in action Saturday as they face host team and No. 4 Washburn at 11 a.m., and wrap up the tournament against Northwest Missouri State at 3:30 p.m. Check Hardingsports.com for the live stats link for both matches.
