SEARCY – Junior forward Jenna Taylor converts two penalty kicks to lead the Harding women's soccer team to a 2-1 double-overtime win over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Sunday in Great American Conference action. The Lady Bisons improved to 5-4-2 overall and stay in second place in the GAC standings with a 3-1-1 record.
After being down 1-0 at halftime, Harding didn't take long to get the equalizer. In the 49th minute freshman midfielder Audrey Adkison hit a cross that went off a Ranger defender's arm which resulted in a penalty kick awarded to the Lady Bisons. Jenna Taylor hit the top right corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
Harding shot nine more times in the second half but couldn't find the game winner. The Lady Bisons took three shots in the first overtime and five in the second overtime without getting the result. Northwestern Oklahoma State didn't get off a shot in overtime play.
Harding received their second penalty kick with a minute left in the second overtime on a Taylor breakaway that resulted in the Northwestern Oklahoma State goalkeeper tripping Taylor inside the box. She stepped up and nailed the back of the net for her first-career game with multiple goals. It was also her first career game-winning goal.
It was the third time in Harding history that the Lady Bisons have taken more than one penalty kick in a game. The last time was in 2002 at Ouachita Baptist. Harding only converted 1-of-2 but went on to win 1-0. The last time Harding made both penalty kicks was in 1999 against Ouachita Baptist in Searcy. Harding won 3-0. Taylor's penalty kicks were the first time a Harding player has made both penalty kicks.
Taylor had previously missed the last four games with an injury.
Northwestern Oklahoma State (0-13-0, 0-5-0) got on the board first in the 36th minute when Taylor Marsh found Denise Rangel in the goal mouth for her first goal of the season.
Harding took 27 shots in the game with 10 on frame. The Rangers took five shots, three on goal.
Harding will be back in action Friday as they host East Central at 7 p.m., at the Harding Soccer Field.
