FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Harding volleyball team fell to No. 11 Washburn 3-2 in the first match and then bounced back and swept Texas Woman's 3-0 on Saturday in the final day of the Arkansas-Fort Smith Tournament. The Lady Bisons move to 9-5 on the season. Harding has won eight of its last ten matches.
In the first match, HU lost the first set and then won the next two. The Lady Bisons led 12-8 in the fourth set before Washburn won six of the next eight points to take a 16-15 lead. With the match tied at 19, Harding had three-straight kills to take a 21-20 lead. Washburn forced a service error and three-straight attack errors to take a 24-22 lead and eventually the set.
The fifth set stayed close throughout the first points until the Ichabods had three-straight kills to take a 13-10 lead which proved to be hard for Harding to overcome as HU lost 15-12.
The Lady Bisons were led by senior outside hitter Mollie Arnold, who had 17 kills and 16 digs. She also had four service aces. Junior outside hitter Marindia Turner had a career-high 17 kills and junior middle blocker Liv Savage had 14 kills.
The HU defense was led by senior defensive specialist Lisa Copeland who had a career-high 35 digs. It was the first time an HU player had over 35 digs since Emily Tate (2008-10) had 36 against Henderson State in 2010.
Washburn (9-3) was led by Marissa Cox who had 24 kills. It was the most kills by an opposing player this season. Kelsey Lewis had 20 digs.
Harding hit .216 in the match to Washburn's .193. HU's defense forced WU to 25 attack errors.
In the final match of the tournament, Harding made quick work of Texas Woman's winning 25-20, 25-22, 25-15.
The Lady Bisons were led by Arnold who had 14 kills and 14 digs. Copeland had 17 digs. Savage had 12 kills and a match-high .522 hitting percentage. She also had five blocks. Turner had a season-high four blocks.
Harding will continue Great American Conference action on Tuesday as they travel to Russellville, Ark., to face Arkansas Tech at 6 p.m.
