Harding Volleyball’s Comeback Falls Short at Arkansas Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Harding volleyball team fell to Arkansas Tech 3-2 (25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 15-25, 15-13) on Tuesday in Great American Conference action. The Lady Bisons fall to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the GAC.

The loss snapped a 32-match conference win streak and a 13-match road win streak. The conference win streak dates back to the 2011 season and the road streak dates back to the 2012 season.

Harding was led by senior outside hitter Erica Heim who had 13 kills and 16 digs to capture her second double-double of the season. Senior outside hitter Marindia Turner had 12 kills and 17 digs. Senior middle blocker Liv Savage and junior outside hitter Molly Howard each added 11 kills for Harding. Senior setter Taryn Eubank had 41 assists and 14 digs. It was her seventh double-double of the season.

The Lady Bisons defense was led by sophomore defensive specialist Anna Leigh Cargile who had a career-high 28 digs. Harding had a season-high 92 digs in the match. Four different players had over 14 digs.

Harding had a season-high 13 blocks in the match. The Lady Bisons were led by Savage who had six.

Arkansas Tech (8-4, 4-0 GAC) was led by senior Emily Todd who had 18 kills and four blocks. Defensive specialist Madison Nagel set a new conference record with 48 digs.

The first set was close in the opening points until Arkansas Tech took a 13-7 lead on 5-0 run on three kills and a service ace. Down 23-16, Harding rallied to pull within one, 24-23, on four kills by Turner. The Golden Suns captured the set on a kill by Todd.

The two teams exchanged points early in the second set before Arkansas Tech broke away on an 8-2 run.  Harding tried to rally put couldn't overcome the deficit as the Golden Suns took the set 25-19.

The third set was close throughout. After being tied at 23, the Lady Bisons had a kill and solo block by Turner to win the set 25-23. Harding had 14 kills in the set and three blocks. The score was tied in the set 14 times.

The fourth set was all Harding. The Lady Bisons took a commanding 21-12 lead and went on to take the set 25-15. Harding had 11 kills in the set and held Arkansas Tech to only seven. The Lady Bisons forced eight Golden Suns errors in the set.

Harding jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth set on three kills and a block but Arkansas Tech mounted a 7-1 run to take a 7-5 lead.  The Lady Bisons answered back with a 6-1 run to lead 11-8. Harding couldn't put the Golden Suns away as Arkansas Tech went on a 6-2 run to take the set 15-13.

The Lady Bisons will be back in action on Saturday as they host Southern Nazarene in GAC action at 2 p.m., at the Rhodes Field House.
