BENTONVILLE, Ark. – The Harding softball team scored 10 runs on 13 hits to defeat Arkansas-Monticello 10-3 in the first round of the Great American Conference tournament at Bentonville High School on Thursday. The Lady Bisons advance to play the No. 1 seed and the No. 8 team in NCAA Division II Arkansas Tech on Thursday night. Time is to be determined.
No. 4 seed Harding improves to 35-22 overall and No. 5 seed Arkansas-Monticello falls to 30-27.
Key Innings
- Harding opened the game scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kimmy Hendricks doubled to right field that scored Courtney Derrick and then Hendricks came around to score on the next batter as Mackenzie Jones hit a single to center field.
- Arkansas-Monticello got a run back in the second when Ashton Currey scored on a Harding throwing error.
- The Lady Bisons blew the game open, scoring four runs on four hits in the third. Peyton Mills, Kinsey Beck, Brookelynn Moon and Amanda Berdon each drove in a Harding run.
- The Lady Bisons tacked on two more runs in the fourth on a Kimmy Hendricks single up the middle with runners at second and third.
- Korie Parker hit a single through the left side in the fifth to score two more runs for the Blossoms.
- Harding got two more insurance runs in the fifth on RBIs by Alexus Lawellin and Peyton Mills.
Key Statistics
- Harding had 13 hits in the game. It was the 23rd time this season the Lady Bisons have had over 10 hits in a game. It also ties for the most hits Harding has produced in the GAC Tournament game. The Lady Bisons had as many against Arkansas-Monticello in 2014.
- Kimmy Hendricks led Harding in the game with three hits, two runs scored and three RBIs. It was the 15th time this season she has had a multiple RBI game and now has a GAC leading 60 RBIs on the season.
- Courtney Derrick, Peyton Mills and Mackenzie Jones each had two hits for the Lady Bisons.
- Harding starting pitcher Hannah Johnson picked up the win to set a new school record for the most wins in a season. She is now 19-8 and surpasses Amber Rollins (2014-15). Johnson threw her 17th complete game as she gave up five hits, two earned runs and struck out three.
- Arkansas-Monticello starter Kendra Coleman got the loss and falls to 15-13 on the season. She pitched two innings, gave up seven hits and five runs.
