Harding Softball Opens Season with Sweep of Missouri S&T

SEARCY – Harding women's softball opened the season by scoring 18 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Missouri S&T on a cold, overcast Saturday at the HU Softball Field. Harding won the opener 7-6 and game two 11-4.

A four-run second inning keyed Harding's victory in game one. Freshman Madi Trump hit a double off the wall to drive in a run in her first collegiate at-bat, and sophomore Peyton Mills had a two-run single in the inning.

Harding added a run on freshman Autumn Humes' RBI single in the fourth and scored two more in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead into the sixth.

Missouri S&T scored three in the inning before Humes came in to shut down the rally and earn her first save. Senior Hannah Johnson (1-0) was the winning pitcher, going four innings and allowing six hits and three earned runs.

Brookelynn Moon led Harding's 11-hit attack, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Mills was 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI, and Alexis Lawellin was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Harding had four doubles in the game.

Kati Viets (0-1) pitched the entire game for Missouri S&T and took the loss.

Harding had 13 hits in game two and blew the game open with a five-run third inning. The Lady Bisons started the inning with four straight singles, with Kimmy Hendricks-Campbell and Humes each driving in runs. Freshman Lexi Ruff then launched a three-run home run to right center for her first collegiate hit.

???????Lawellin had a two-run double in Harding's three-run sixth that extended Harding's lead to seven runs at 11-4.

???????Humes (1-0) pitched a complete game, allowing four runs in seven innings, and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs at the plate. Lawellin and Hendricks-Campbell also had two-hit games.

Avery English (0-1) pitched for Missouri S&T and suffered the loss, allowing 10 earned runs.

Harding returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Division II UAM Softball Challenge in Bentonville, Arkansas. The Lady Bisons will take on Missouri-St. Louis, Missouri Western, Northwest Missouri and Pittsburg State at the event.
