Trump Blast Gives Harding Softball Split at Arkansas Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Freshman Amanda Fields hit an inside-the-park home run, and senior Madi Trump blasted a three-run homer to give Harding a 4-1 victory over 21st-ranked Arkansas Tech and give the Lady Bisons a doubleheader split Wednesday in Great American Conference play. Tech won the first game 5-2.

With the split, Harding's record moved to 28-18 overall and 20-16 in the GAC. The Lady Bisons are tied with Henderson State for fourth place in the conference standings with eight conference games remaining. Harding hosts last-place Arkansas-Monticello this weekend and concludes the regular season at Northwestern Oklahoma on April 27-28.

Harding trailed 1-0 in game two after Arkansas Tech scored on a two-out single in the first off Harding starter Emily Garrett. From that point on, Garrett posted zeros on the Tech row of the scoreboard before running into a little trouble in the seventh.

In the meantime, Harding tied the game on Fields' home run. Fields hit the ball deep to center field, and Tech's Ashton Sangster got her cleat stuck in the fence trying to make the play. The right fielder Janie Knowles retrieved the ball and threw home. Fields was called safe at home due to interference on the catcher Makenzie Addis.

Two innings later, Trump hit a 2-1 offering over the left field fence to score Katie Carney and Katlyn Gordon and put Harding ahead by three runs. It was her second home run of the season.

Tech threatened in the seventh and sent the potential winning run to the plate. Addis singled to lead off the inning, and Emma Dwyer came on to relieve Garrett (9-4). Sydnie Henson walked and, one out later, Sangster was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dwyer ended the threat by striking out Paige Mendoza looking and inducing a fly out to right from Knowles to end the game and give Dwyer her fourth save.

Trump hit leadoff for Harding in the game and went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. Sophomore Briley Feringa went 3-for-3, and sophomore Lindsey Duncan was 2-for-3.

In earning the win, Garrett pitched six innings and allowed eight hits and one earned run with no walks or strikeouts.

Kristen Dempsey (9-4) pitched 5 2/3 innings and got the loss, yielding four earned runs on nine hits.

In the opener, Madison Leggett's two-run home run to left center in the fourth tied the game 2-2, but Addis hit a three-run home run in the sixth that gave Tech the victory.

Leggett's home run was her seventh. Freshman Kyndal Pirtle had two of Harding's five hits.

Amanda Berry (9-6) started and allowed five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.
