No. 22 Harding Upends Henderson State 14-13

SEARCY – Harding junior fullback Cole Chancey carried 38 times for 166 yards, and the Bison defense held Henderson State's vaunted passing attack to 139 yards in a 14-13 victory Saturday in a Great American Conference battle at First Security Stadium.

The victory by 22nd-ranked Harding snapped an eight-game streak in the series of the road team winning the game. The Bisons improved to 3-1 with their third straight victory. Henderson State suffered its first loss and had its five-game winning streak in Searcy come to an end. The Reddies are also 3-1.

Harding had two second-quarter drives end inside the Henderson State 10-yard line, including one within an inch of the goal line just before halftime.

Harding then took the opening drive of the second half 60 yards on 14 plays with Chancey scoring from a yard out with 6:28 left in the third quarter and giving the Bisons a 14-10 lead. The key play of the drive came on 4th-and-3 at the Harding 47. The Bisons lined up in punt formation but snapped the ball to up-man Shedrick Robinson, who powered through a tackle at the line of scrimmage and picked up 17 yards. The drive ate up 8:33 off the clock.

Early in the fourth quarter, a Harding fumble set up Henderson State at the Harding 33. Henderson State picked up one first down but had to settle for a 30-yard field goal that made the score 14-13 with 8:05 left.

A Harding punt gave Henderson State the ball back with a chance to retake the lead. The Reddies took over at their own 20. On the second play of the drive, Henderson State quarterback Richard Stammetti overthrew his receiver, and Harding's V'Onte Williams made a diving interception to seal the victory for the Bisons.

Harding controlled the ball for almost 24 minutes of the second half, limiting Henderson State to only 15 offensive plays. The Bisons had 40 minutes, 20 seconds of possession in the game.

Chancey is the first Harding player to carry the ball 38 times in a game since Mike Vanlandingham's school-record 40 carries against Henderson State in 1978. His 166 rushing yards topped his previous career high of 165 against Ashland in the 2017 playoffs. Chancey moved past former teammate Zach Shelley for fourth place on Harding's career rushing list with 2,696 yards.

Stammetti was just 12-of-27 for 139 passing yards with two interceptions no touchdowns after entering the game as the GAC's leader in both passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Senior Jacory Nichols had a standout night on special teams. He had a 30-yard punt return and three kickoff returns for 85 yards. His 40-yard kickoff return gave Harding great field position on its first drive of the second half.

Harding rushed for 319 yards with its longest run of the night coming from junior Baylor Cohu on a 25-yard carry.

Harding plays its second consecutive home game next Saturday against Southern Nazarene. The Crimson Storm snapped a three-game losing streak with a 22-21 home win over Southeastern Oklahoma Saturday.
