Harding Softball Defeats Henderson State in Home Opener

SEARCY – The Harding softball team never trailed as it went on to defeat Henderson State 9-4 in Great American Conference action Saturday in its home opener.

Harding improves to 16-8 overall and 5-4 in the GAC.

Henderson State falls to 5-19 overall and 3-6 in the GAC.

Sophomore Maegan Pistokache (7-2) got the win out of the bullpen for Harding. The right-hander went 4.2 shutout innings, giving up four hits, no walks and striking out two. Sophomore Abby Burch also pitched well, going one shutout inning while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.

Junior Nicole Shano led the way offensively for the Lady Bisons, going 1-for-2 in game with a home run, two walks and two RBIs. Freshman Emma Curry put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Jordan Cabana also helped out, going 2-for-2 for Harding with three RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lady Bisons got on the board first in the first inning scoring four runs on four hits. Nicole Shano highlighted the inning with a two-run home run to left center. Ashton Bryce and Jordan Cabana also had RBIs in the inning.

The Reddies answered back in the second inning scoring four runs on three hits.

Harding broke the tie in the fifth scoring three runs on four hits. Jordan Cabana got two more RBIs in the inning.

The Lady Bisons made it 9-4 in the sixth when Emma Curry hit a double up the middle that scored two.

GAME NOTES

» Six Lady Bisons had multiple hits in the game.
» Harding is now 8-1 in home openers
» The win marked Harding head coach Ashley Reeves first home win. Reeves is in her first year at helm of the Lady Bisons.
» The Lady Bisons out-hit the Reddies at a 13-7 clip.
» Harding went 8-for-13 (.615) with runners in scoring position.
» Harding pitchers faced 29 Henderson State hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and six fly balls while striking out five.
» Shano's home run tied her for the most home runs in a season. She currently has 11 and is tied with Peyton Mills who hit 11 in 2016 and Amanda Fields who hit as many in 2019.
» Henderson State was led offensively by freshman Justine Burch, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Burch is the sister of Harding pitcher Abby Burch.

The two teams will wrap up their series Sunday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
