BRANSON, Mo. – No. 21 Harding softball split its two games on the first day of the NCAA D-II Battle in chilly conditions Friday. The Lady Bisons dropped the first game to McKendree 7-2 but bounced back to defeat Maryville 4-2.
Harding moves to 10-2 on the season.
GAME ONE – McKendree 7, #21 Harding 2
The 21st-ranked Harding softball team struggled to find its offense on Friday, falling 7-2 to McKendree.
The Lady Bisons were held scoreless through five innings by McKendree's Samantha Huck, who pitched a complete game and struck out nine. Harding finally broke through in the sixth, scoring two unearned runs on an error.
Zoey Neal had three hits to lead the Lady Bisons, and Kaya Lee added a single and a stolen base. But Harding couldn't muster enough offense to overcome McKendree's late surge.
The Bearcats scored two runs in the fifth and added five more in the seventh, capped by a grand slam from Samantha Roth. Brooklyn Gobble (4-1) took the loss in relief for Harding, allowing five runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Avery Booker started the game for the Lady Bisons, allowing two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. Harding fell to 9-2 with the loss, while McKendree improved to 8-1.
GAME TWO – #21 Harding 4, Maryville 2
No. 21 Harding softball rallied for a 4-2 win over Maryville on Friday, behind a strong performance from Zoey Neal.
Neal hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to put Harding ahead, and added an RBI single in the third. Riley Price pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two.
Maryville took an early lead in the second inning, with Cora Boyle driving in Mandi Lenon with a single. The Saints added another run in the third, as Corona, Emil stole home.
Harding tied the game in the fifth, with Neal's homer scoring Emaline Pearson. The Lady Bisons took the lead for good in the sixth, as Macy Ham drove in Riley Price with a single.
Chayse Ramey took the loss for Maryville, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in six innings.
Harding will be back in action Saturday when it takes on McKendree at 11:30 a.m. and Maryville at 1:30 p.m.
