MANSFIELD, Texas — Ella Friederich fueled a fifth-inning comeback in the nightcap to help Harding salvage a doubleheader split on opening day, as the Lady Bisons defeated Maryville 6-4 after dropping their season opener 10-1 to Missouri Western on Friday in the Lonestar Invitational.
Game 1: Missouri Western 10, Harding 1
The season opener proved difficult for the Lady Bisons as Missouri Western used a pair of home runs and a four-run third inning to pull away.
Harding's lone run came in the second inning. Friederich doubled to left-center and later scored when Alexis Boswell reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt that resulted in a throwing error by the Griffons' catcher.
Missouri Western (1-0) broke the game open in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run from Sydney Young. The Griffons added three more in the sixth on a three-run blast by Ayva McComas to put the run rule into effect.
Brooklyn Gobble (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs in 3.1 innings. Ashlyn Finarty earned the win for the Griffons, holding Harding to just three hits over six innings.
Game 2: Harding 6, Maryville 4
In the second game of the day, the Lady Bisons (1-1) overcame an early 3-1 deficit with a steady 11-hit attack.
Harding took an initial lead in the second inning when Baylee McGregor grounded out to second, scoring Friederich. However, Maryville surged ahead with two runs in the third and another in the fourth, aided by three Harding errors.
The Lady Bisons responded in the fifth. After singles by Bailey Robinson and Cameron Timmons, Zoey Neal loaded the bases with a two-out infield single. Friederich then delivered the game's biggest hit, a two-RBI single to center field that tied the game at 3-3. Lana Danielson followed immediately with an RBI double to right to give Harding a 4-3 lead.
Harding added two insurance runs in the sixth on a Maryville error that scored Robinson and Tori Turner.
Avery Booker (1-0) earned the win, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing three runs (none earned).
