PENSACOLA, Fla. – Facing the top-ranked team in the nation on their home courts, the No. 42 Harding men's tennis team flashed competitive grit Tuesday afternoon before ultimately falling 5-2 to No. 1 West Florida at the Carson Tennis Complex.
The Bisons (9-5) managed to split the singles matches that went to full sets, but the Argonauts (14-1) utilized a sweep of the doubles point and a pair of straight-set wins in the middle of the lineup to defend their No. 1 ranking.
How it Happened
West Florida set the tone early in doubles play. After taking the No. 2 and No. 3 flights decisively, the Argonauts completed the sweep at the top spot. In a battle of top-five pairings, UWF's No. 1-ranked Diego Duran and Sebastian Rondon narrowly outlasted Harding's No. 5-ranked duo of Adrian Solorzano and Cian Mikkelsen, winning 7-6 to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
In singles action, Adrian Solorzano provided the highlight of the day for the Bisons. Playing at the No. 1 position, Solorzano dispatched Mark Neyelov in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to earn his ninth singles win of the season and his third at the top flight.
Luis Agullo also found the win column for Harding at the No. 6 spot. Agullo bounced back from a second-set stumble to defeat Samuel Vidales 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. The win marked Agullo's 35th career singles victory, moving him into a tie for 25th place on Harding's all-time career wins list.
The Argonauts proved too deep elsewhere, securing straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 5. Two other matches went the distance but ultimately favored West Florida; Sebastian De Las Salas and Jan Alexander Has both pushed their opponents to three sets at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively, before falling in the final frames.
Up Next
The Bisons will look to bounce back as they continue their road swing through the Southeast. Harding travels to Clinton, Mississippi, on Thursday, March 26, for a non-conference matchup against Mississippi College. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
