SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The No. 35-ranked Harding men's tennis team wasted little time in its postseason opener Wednesday, sweeping Augustana (SD) 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
With the victory, the Bisons (15-6) advance to the conference semifinals for the third consecutive year and the fourth time since joining the MIAA for the 2020-21 season. Harding will play the winner of the Nebraska-Kearney and Southern Arkansas match Thursday at 2 p.m.
Fast Start in Doubles
Harding, the No. 1 seed from the MIAA/GAC South Division, flexed its muscles early in doubles play against the North Division's No. 4 seed. The nation's No. 3-ranked duo of Cian Mikkelsen and Adrian Solorzano made quick work of Tadeusz Michalowski and Pedro Pinto at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-1.
The Bisons secured the doubles point at the No. 2 position, where the No. 27-ranked pairing of Florian Gayme and Jan Alexander Has defeated Drew Gohl and Clayton Poppenga, 6-2.
Singles Dominance
Harding carried that momentum into singles, winning the first set on five of the six courts to demoralize the Vikings (6-10).
Jan Alexander Has was the first off the court in singles, extending the Harding lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Clayton Poppenga at No. 6. Shortly after, Caleb Folse put the Bisons on the brink of the clinch with a 6-1, 7-6 win at No. 5.
Junior Sebastian De Las Salas provided the finishing touch at the No. 2 flight. After a tight first set, De Las Salas pulled away from Jose Antonio Velasco for a 7-5, 6-1 victory to seal the dual.
When the match was halted, No. 66-ranked Adrian Solorzano was locked in a third-set battle at No. 1, while Cian Mikkelsen and Luis Agullo were also in unfinished battles at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
Historical Context
Wednesday marked the first-ever meeting between Harding and Augustana in men's tennis. Since entering the MIAA five years ago, the Bisons have become a fixture in the tournament's final four, previously reaching the semifinals in 2022, 2024, and 2025.
