SEARCY, Ark. — The wait is over.
After 14 appearances and years of knocking on the door, the Harding men's tennis team secured its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory Monday morning, sweeping No. 38 Nebraska-Kearney 4-0 in the Central Region 2 Final at the David Elliott Tennis Complex.
The win not only marks a historic milestone for the program and first-year head coach Craig Kirchgessner but also punches the Bisons' ticket to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Surprise, Arizona, for the first time.
Elite Doubles Performance
In front of an energized home crowd of more than 200 fans, the Bisons (17-7) flipped the script from their previous meeting with the Lopers. After dropping the doubles point to UNK in the MIAA semifinals, Harding dominated the opening session on Monday.
The No. 27-ranked duo of Florian Gayme and Jan Alexander Has put Harding on the board first with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot. Moments later, the No. 3-ranked pairing of Cian Mikkelsen and Adrian Solorzano avenged their previous loss to No. 7-ranked Andy Brisdon and Ivan Melnik, securing the doubles point with a gutsy 6-4 win at the top flight.
Singles Dominance
Harding carried that momentum into singles, where they appeared a step faster than the Lopers (16-8) on every court.
Cian Mikkelsen was the first off the court at No. 3, turning in a near-flawless 6-0, 6-2 performance over Alexandre Jaulin to extend the lead to 2-0. It was Mikkelsen's seventh straight singles victory and 50th of his career.
At the No. 1 position, No. 66-ranked Adrian Solorzano delivered a senior-year masterclass. After cruising through the first set 6-1 against Ivan Melnik, Solorzano weathered a late push in the second set to win a 7-6 (7-2) tiebreaker, putting the Bisons just one point away from history.
The clinching moment came at the No. 5 spot. Caleb Folse dominated his match against Cesare Carpano, winning 6-1, 6-3 to ignite a celebration at the Elliott Tennis Complex. When the match was halted, the Bisons were either leading or in a third set on all remaining courts.
On to Arizona
With the victory, the Bisons advance to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship. The national rounds will be held from May 20-24 at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
The NCAA will announce the national championship bracket and seeding later this week.
