Late Goal Sends Delta State Past HU Mens Soccer

by Scott Goode

Box Score
SEARCY – Delta State reserve freshman forward Florian Parisot volleyed in a cross from freshman midfielder Steven Axe to give the Statesmen a 1-0 Gulf South Conference road victory over Harding on Friday.

Delta State (6-5-1, 1-0-1) had only five shots in the game, but Parisot's goal in the 78th minute was all it needed. Harding (3-9-0, 0-3-0) had 19 shots but saw its school record five-game home winning streak come to an end. The Bisons have yet to score a goal in its three conference matches.

Statesmen goalkeeper Evan Griffin had nine saves in the shutout. Sophomore James Thurmond had three saves for the Bisons, including two from point-blank range. Thurmond stopped an Axe breakaway in the first half and deflected a blast from David Horstmann in the second period.

Delta State also defeated Harding 1-0 last season in Cleveland, Miss.

Harding is back in action Sunday against Alabama-Huntsville. The Chargers (5-5-0, 0-1-0) lost 4-2 to Ouachita Baptist earlier Friday.
