Lady Bison Basketball Falls in Season Opener

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Harding women's basketball team tipped-off their season Sunday against Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas. Despite a halftime led the Lady Bisons fell 69-58. Harding falls to 0-1 on the season.

With 10:08 left to play in the game, Harding pulled within three points on a fastbreak layup by Bailey St. Clair in which she was fouled and made the free throw.  The Mustang defense held the Lady Bisons scoreless for the next five minutes as they began to pull away, leading by as much as 11. Harding tried to pull together a late rally but a Midwestern jumper in the lane and free throw swung the momentum back in the Mustang's directions.

Midwestern State shot 70 percent from the field (14-of-20) and 75 percent from the behind the three-point line (3-of-4) in the second half.

The Lady Bisons were led by senior forward Stacey Owens who had 15 points. Owens was 5-of-8 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. St. Clair was the other Harding player in double-figures adding 13 points. She also had 5-of-19 steals for the Lady Bisons. Sophomore Kallie Bartee led Harding on the boards grabbing six rebounds.

The Mustangs had three players in double-figure scoring; leading the way was Nolisha Markham who finished with 20 points. Cierra Thompson added 15 points. Aqueelah Watkins had 10 points and led Midwestern on the boards with five. Watkins also had four blocks of the nine total blocks by the Mustangs.

Harding scored five points in 42 seconds to take a 31-24 lead into the locker room.  

Harding was 2-of-13 from the three-point line. The Lady Bisons had 20 points off the Mustang's 28 turnovers.

Harding will be back in action Monday, traveling to Denton, Texas to face Texas Women's at 6:30 p.m.
