PENSACOLA, Fla. – A last ditch effort wasn't enough Saturday night as the Harding women's basketball team fell to West Florida 72-68 in the West Florida Tip-Off Classic. Harding falls to 0-4 on the season.
With a 1:46 left to play, junior guard Bailey St. Clair hit a jumper to pull the Lady Bisons to within six of the Argos. 25 seconds later, Elizabeth Nagel drove into the lane and hit a layup to cut the deficit to four. A foul by the Lady Bisons sent West Florida to the line. Two made free-throws put Harding behind by six with 1:06 left to play. The Lady Bisons didn't go away as senior forward Stacey owens hit a three-pointer with 56 seconds left to cut the lead to three. A missed jumper by the Argos with 21 seconds left, allowed the Lady Bisons one last attempt to tie the game but a Lady Bison miss with four seconds left sealed the win for the Argos.
The Lady Bisons had three players that ended in double-figure scoring. Leading the way was Owens and St. Clair who each had 16 points for the Lady Bisons. Freshman guard Katie Dunn came off the bench for the Lady Bisons and had 10 points. St. Clair led Harding on the boards grabbing seven.
West Florida was led by Amy Drake and Tiffany Williams who each poured in 17 points.
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field in the game, Harding 57 and West Florida 50. West Florida hit 10-of-17 three-pointers in the game.
The Lady Bisons have their home opener Monday, hosting Central Baptist at the Rhodes Field House at 5:30 p.m.
