Women’s Basketball Travels to Alabama-Huntsville Saturday

SEARCY – The Harding women's basketball team travels to Huntsville, Ala., Saturday to take on Alabama-Huntsville at 2 p.m. Due to graduation, the game has been moved to the Huntsville High School gym. The Lady Bisons look to continue their six game winning streak and head into the game with a 6-4 overall record.  

COACHES: Harding is coached by Tim Kirby, who enters his fifth season at the helm of the Lady Bisons. Kirby has a 75-49 career record. Kirby took over the Lady Bison program before the 2005-06 season after serving 12 seasons as the Harding's men's basketball assistant.

Alabama-Huntsville is coached by Roy Heintz, who is in is first season at the helm of the Lady Chargers.

THE LADY BISONS: Harding is coming off its best-ever defensive effort with an 88-34 victory over Ecclesia this past Saturday. Holding the Lady Royals to only 34 points was the fewest points allowed in Harding history. Lindsey Root tied a career high 19 points to lead the Lady Bisons.

The Harding bench has really contributed this season, averaging 31 points per game for the Lady Bisons. Sophomore Sierra Rollins has come off the bench this season and giving the Lady Bisons a boost of entergy. Rollins averages 5.0 points per game, 3.6 rebounds per game and 2.1 steals per game.

During the six-game winning streak, Harding has defeated their opponents by an average of 26.8 points.

The Lady Bisons are averaging 13.3 steals per game, ranking them second in the GSC and 40th in the NCAA. Junior Bailey St. Clair leads the GSC in steals per game with an average of 3.8. Over the past five games the Lady Bisons are averaging 14.8 steals per game.

St. Clair leads the Lady Bisons, averaging 14.1 points per game which ranks her tenth in the GSC. She also averages 6.3 rebounds per game. St. Clair is shooting a team high 57.1 percent from the floor, which is fifth in the GSC.

Senior Stacey Owens is the other Lady Bison that averages double-figure scoring, averaging 13.9 points per game.

Harding returns five players from the 2008-09 season. The Lady Bisons have eight new faces this year, four of them are transfers. Six of the Harding newcomers have already made their debut for the Lady Bisons.

THE LADY CHARGERS: Alabama-Huntsville is coming off a tough five game road skid that included four Gulf South Conference West Division teams. During the road skid the Lady Chargers went 0-5. Alabama-Huntsville fell to Delta State 78-52, Christian Brothers 60-77, Arkansas-Monticello 75-68, and Southern Arkansas 81-72.  The Lady Chargers defeated Henderson State at home earlier this season, 88-66.

Alabama-Huntsville (2-6) is a member of the Gulf South Conference East Division.  The Lady Chargers return two starters and seven player overall from last year's squad.

The Lady Chargers are led by junior transfer Marissa Carter, who averages 13.9 points per game. Two other UAH players average double-figure scoring, freshman Monica Boatwright averages 12.4 points per game and junior Candace Lee averages 11.0 points per game.

Alabama-Huntsville ranks second in the GSC in three-point field goals made averaging 7.13 a game.  The Lady Chargers also rank third in blocks per game, averaging 2.75.

SERIES:  Harding is facing Alabama-Huntsville for the 11th time. The Lady Bisons have won the last six meetings between the two teams.
