ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Harding volleyball team had a season-high 76 kills and battled back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Ouachita Baptist 3-2 in Gulf South Conference action Tuesday night. Harding improves to 10-8 on the season and 5-1 in the GSC West Division.
It was the first time Harding has had over 70 kills in a match since the Lady Bisons had 76 against Alaska-Anchorage on Aug. 29, 2008.
Five Harding players ended with double-figure kills. Freshman outside hitter Mollie Arnold led Harding with 19 kills. Senior middle blocker Samantha Anderson had a career-high 18 kills. Junior middle blocker Alex Smith has a season-high 13 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Bailee Graham tied her career high with 13 kills. Freshman outside hitter Lisa Copeland had a career-high 10 kills in the match.
The Lady Bisons ended with 95 digs in the match. It was the second-straight match Harding has had over 95 digs in a match. Senior defensive specialist Emily Tate led Harding with 32 digs. It was also the second-straight match she has had over 30 digs. Sophomore setter Amber Schinzing tied her career high in the match with 14 digs. Arnold captured a double-double with 13 digs. Junior defensive specialist Amber Parker added 12 digs and sophomore Weslynn Willams had 11 digs.
Schinzing had a career-high 66 assists in the match. It was the first time since Oct. 27, 2007 against Texas A&M-Commerce that a Lady Bison has had over 65 assists in a match.
In the deciding fifth set, Harding jumped out a 7-3 lead but Ouachita Baptist battled back to cut the deficit to one, 11-10. The two teams exchanged eight points and the Lady Tigers tied the set 15-15 on a Harding attack error. Harding put the match away, on two straight kills by Anderson and junior middle blocker Alex Smith.
Ouachita Baptist had 104 digs in the match, leading the way was defensive specialist Allison Frizzell with 36. Kaitlyn Mitcham wasn't far behind her and ended with 27 digs. Meghan Askew led the Lady Tigers offense with 17 kills.
It was the first time this season Harding has won and been out-hit by an opponent. The Lady Tigers had 61 kills on 183 attempts with 17 errors for a .240 hitting percentage. The Lady Bisons had 76 kills on 228 attempts and 32 errors for a .193 hitting percentage.
The Lady Bisons will be back in action Thursday as they travel to Magnolia, Ark., to face Southern Arkansas at 7 p.m.
