MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Great shooting and great defense allows the Harding women's basketball team to take sole possession of third place in the Gulf South Conference West Division as they defeat Christian Brothers 73-36 in Memphis, Tenn., Thursday night. Harding improves to 13-10 overall and 6-5 in the GSC West Division.
Christian Brothers' 36 points was one off the school record of 35 vs. Arkansas-Monticello in 2001. The 37-point margin of victory was the largest by the Lady Bisons in series history. The previous high was 24 points in a 75-51 win in 1996.
Harding shot 50 percent from the field, hitting 27-of-54 shots. It was the second time this season the Lady Bisons have shot over 50 percent in a game. Harding forced 20 turnovers with 16 steals. The Lady Bisons defense had seven blocks on the night and held the Lady Bucs (14-9, 5-6) to shooting 23.2 percent from the field. Christian Brothers only had 13 made shots in the game, six of them were three-pointers.
Christian Brothers opened the game with a 7-0 lead, but Harding outscored the Lady Bucs 33-9 the rest of the first half. Harding took a 33-16 lead into the locker room. In the second half, the Lady Bisons continued to build on their lead as they didn't allow the Lady Bucs to get any closer than 16.
Every Harding player scored in the game. Senior Stacey Owens led all scoring with 16 points, hitting three 3-pointers. She also had nine rebounds for the Lady Bisons. Sophomore Lindsey Root, freshman Danielle Reiher and senior Meaghen Kelleybrew each had 10 points for Harding. Junior Bailey St. Clair had five steals to bring her season total to 74. She also had five assists and nine rebounds in the game.
Tameka Wooten led the Lady Bucs with 13 points.
Harding outrebounded Christian Brothers, 50-26.
The Lady Bisons dominated the paint scoring 30 points to the Lady Bucs 10.
The top four teams in the GSC West Division will go to the conference tournament at the end of the season.
Harding will be back in action Saturday as they host Arkansas-Monticello at 5:30 p.m., in the Rhodes Field House.
