RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Despite a season-high 82 digs, the Harding volleyball team came-up short against Arkansas Tech 3-2 on Tuesday night in Gulf South Conference action. Harding falls to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in the GSC West Division. It was the tenth-straight victory for the Golden Suns.
The Lady Bisons had three players that ended with double-figure digs. Leading the way was senior Emily Tate who had 28, tying her career-high. Junior Amber Parker had a career-high with 21 digs. Sophomore setter Amber Schinzing ended with 10 digs for the Lady Bisons. Schinzing captured her eighth career double-double with 42 assists for harding
The Harding hitting duo led the offensive attack for the Lady Bisons. Leading the way was freshman outside hitter Mollie Arnold who ended with 23 kills. Arnold also added nine digs. Sophomore Reagan Smith added 15 for the Lady Bisons. Both players rank in the top ten in the GSC in kills.
Arkansas Tech (15-3, 3-0 GSC West) led 7-6 in the first set until Harding went on a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 advantage in the set. ATU got within two three times but each time Harding answered back to extend their lead. Smith ended the set with a kill as Harding took the set 25-20.
The second set was all Arkansas Tech. They went on a 15-3 run midway through the set and didn't look back. Harding tried to rally but fell short as the Golden Suns took set two, 25-14.
In the third set, both teams struggled to take control early on until the Lady Bisons went on a 16-3 run to take the set 25-11. The Harding defense forced 10 Arkansas Tech errors in the set.
The Lady Bisons looked to finish off the Golden Suns in the fourth set after taking a 2-1 advantage in the match. Arkansas Tech broke away and took a 12-8 lead but Arnold had three kills and a error allowed Harding to tie the set 12 all. Sarah Von Lienen shifted the momentum back in favor of Arkansas Tech with two straight kills. Harding couldn't rally back as Arkansas Tech tied the match 2-2 after taking the set, 25-19.
In the deciding fifth set, Harding led early in the set but a couple of Arkansas Tech kills allowed the Golden Suns to take a 9-8 lead. The Lady Bisons never saw the lead again as ATU took the set and the match with a 15-13 victory.
Von Lienen had a career-high 28 kills in the match to lead Arkansas Tech. Laura Farney added 14 for the Golden Suns.
Arkansas Tech ended with 92 digs, five of the Golden Suns players ended with double-figures. Brennae Benda led ATU with 21.
Harding had 12 blocks in the match, tying a season-high. Freshman Alyssa Short finished with five and junior Alex Smith added four.
Harding continues their two-game road trip as they travel to Memphis to face Christian Brothers on Thursday at 7 p.m.
