Harding to Induct 14 into Athletics Hall of Fame

Ceremony in Searcy on Jan. 27, 2012

SEARCY – Harold Valentine, the chairman of the Harding University Bison Boosters Hall of Fame committee, announced Monday that 14 new members will be inducted into the Harding Athletics Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Friday, Jan. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Heritage Center Founders' Room.

The new members include Vince Adams (baseball), Bill Barden (distinguished coaching/non-Harding University category), Dr. David Burks (distinguished service), Corey Camper (basketball), Janet Kogo Cherobon-Bawcom (cross country/track), Rolando Garcia (basketball), Pat Gill (football), Regina Huddleston-Renfroe (volleyball), Kymm Hudson-Alexander (basketball), Tony McCoy (football and track), Shauna Queen-Perez (cross country/track), Arturo Rodriguez (tennis), Jacob Rotich (cross country/track), Joe David Smith (football).

The Hall of Fame induction dinner and ceremony are open to the public. Tickets are $12 each and can be purchased and picked up at the Ganus Athletic Center before Friday, Jan. 20.

The Bison Boosters induct new members into the Harding Athletics Hall of Fame once every five years, and the 2012 class will be the 10th in the Hall's history. The Hall currently includes 70 members.

Below are brief bios of the 2012 Harding Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Class:


Vince Adams (baseball)

·         Played 99 games as a Bison.

·         Batted .330 with 27 HR and 87 RBI and went 13-5 with a 3.49 ERA. Had 123 strikeouts in 116.0 innings.

·         Harding's career leader in slugging percentage (.689) and tied for second in home runs (27).

·         Ranks fifth in strikeouts per nine innings (9.54) and 10th in ERA (3.49).

·         Set the Harding record with a .868 slugging percentage in 1975.

·         Named All-AIC in 1974, 1975 and 1976.


Bill Barden (distinguished alumni in coaching)

·         Compiled 212 career wins in 25 years as head football coach at Harding Academy.

·         11 regional championships, 5 state championship games, 3 state championships.


David Burks (distinguished service)

·         Inaugurated as Harding's fourth president in 1987.

·         Initiated a revitalization of Harding's campus that included renovations of First Security Stadium, Rhodes Field House, Jerry Moore Field, and Harding's tennis courts.

·         Under his direction, Harding has had 25 consecutive years of record enrollment.

·         Facilitated Harding's move from the NAIA to NCAA Division II.


Corey Camper (basketball)

·         Played in 117 games as a Bison.

·         Ranks third in career points (2,102), third in steals (172), fourth in free throws (410), and fifth in scoring average (18.0).

·         Averaged 22.5 points in 1988-89, the fifth-best average in program history.

·         Averaged more than 20 points in two separate seasons, and one of only two Harding players ever to lead the team in scoring all four seasons (Butch Gardner). Also led Harding in assists in three of those seasons and steals twice.

·         Honorable Mention All-America in 1989 and 1990

·         All-AIC in 1989 and 1990

·         Won the AIC scoring title in 1989.

 

Janet Kogo Cherobon-Bawcom (cross country/track)

·         Four-time All-Gulf South Conference in cross country (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003)

·         GSC individual cross country champion in 2002 and 2003

·         Four-time All-Region (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003)

·         NCAA South Region champion in 2002 and 2003

·         NCAA All-America in 2002 and 2003

·          Academic All-GSC in 2002 and 2003

·         Academic All-District in 2004

·         GSC Top Ten Award – 2003

·         Berryhill Award – 2004

·         School record holder in the indoor 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters and distance medley relay.

·         School record holder in the outdoor 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters, and 10,000 meters.

·         Three-time indoor All-America and was the 5,000 meter national champion in 2005.

·         Three-time outdoor All-America and was the 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter national champion in 2005.

 

Rolando Garcia (basketball)

·         Played 117 games as a Bison.

·         Harding career leader in field goal percentage (61.6), second in rebounds (950) and fourth in points (1,922).

·         Scored 761 points in 1990-91, the most ever in a single season.

·         Averaged 25.4 points in 1990-91, second most in a single season … averaged 10.1 rebounds.

·         3rd Team NAIA All-America in 1990-91

·         Won the AIC scoring title and earned All-AIC in 1991

·         Was the only Harding player ever to lead the AIC in scoring and rebounding in the same season.

·         Also led the AIC in field goal percentage in 1988 and 1990

 

Pat Gill (football)

·         1989 NAIA 1st Team All-America

·         1990 NAIA 2nd Team All-America

·         1991 NAIA 1st Team All-America

·         1991 Kodak 1st Team All-America

·         One of only two Harding players (Paul Simmons) to earn All-America three times

·         1989, 1990, 1991 1st Team All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference

·         Harding's career leader in tackles (476)

·         Set the single-season tackles record in 1989 (198)

 

Regina Huddleston-Renfroe (volleyball)

·         A four-year letterwinner from 1992-95.

·         Earned All-AIC in 1993, 1994, and 1995.

·         The only Harding volleyball player to earn All-AIC three times.

·         NAIA All-Southwest Region in 1995.

·         Harding was 72-28 in her final two seasons.

 

Kymm Hudson-Alexander (basketball)

·         Played in 122 games as a Lady Bison.

·         Ranks second at Harding in career scoring (1,910 points) and scoring average (15.7).

·         Ranks fourth in career rebounds (863) and eighth in rebound average (7.1).

·         Made a school record 228 free throws in 1993-94.

·         Scored 20.7 points per game in 1992-93, the third-highest average by a Lady Bison.

·         Honorable Mention All-America in 1993 and 1994.

·         Four-time All-AIC (1992, 1993, 1994, 1995) and is the only four-time All-Conference honoree in Lady Bison history.


Tony McCoy (football and track)

·         Earned All-America honors in the 60-yard dash at the NAIA Indoor Championships in 1983.

·         Combined with Attah Frimpong, Drake Jackson and Gil Stegall to set the Harding 4x100-meter relay record of 41.11 in 1983.

·         Won the 200 meters at the 1982 AIC track championship.

·         Received the Bruce Gaither Memorial Inspiration Award in 1982.

·         Ranks fourth at Harding in career rushing yards per game (75.2) and fifth in all-purpose yards per game (127.4).

·         Rushed for 1,021 yards in 1981, second in the AIC that season and sixth in a Harding single season.

·         Tied for fifth at Harding with 999 career kickoff return yards.

·         Had 1,642 all-purpose yards in 1981, third-most in a Harding single season.


Shauna Queen-Perez (cross country/track)

·         All-America in the 1,000-yard run in 1991, 1992 and 1993.

·         All-America in the distance medley relay in 1992.

·         Won the AIC championship in 1993 in the 1,500 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters and 3,000 meters.

·         Was the AIC high point winner at the 1993 outdoor championship.

·         Won the 800 meters and 3,000 meters at the 1992 AIC championship.

·         Three-time All-AIC in cross country and was the individual champion in 1991 and 1992.

·         Placed 28th at the 1990 NAIA national cross country meet.

·         NAIA Scholar-Athlete in cross country in 1992 and in outdoor track and field in 1993.


Arturo Rodriguez (tennis)

·         Earned NAIA 2nd Team All-America in 1995 and 1997.

·         Ranks seventh at Harding with 72 career singles victories.

·         Tied for Harding's career lead with 53 singles victories.

·         Teamed with Guillermo Hernandez to win a Harding record 51 total doubles victories and 39 dual match doubles victories from 1995-98.

·         Tied for fourth at Harding with 64 career doubles victories.


Jacob Rotich (cross country/track)

·         Three-time All-Gulf South Conference in cross country (2001, 2002, 2003)

·         GSC individual cross country champion in 2002 and 2003

·         Set GSC 8K Cross Country Course Record in Memphis, Tenn., in 2003 (24:03)

·         Three-time All-Region (2001, 2002, 2003)

·         Two-time NCAA South Region champion in 2001 and 2003

·         Three-time NCAA Cross Country All-American (2001, 2002, 2003)

·         NCAA Cross Country National Championship Runner-up – Harding's highest finish (2003)

·         Berryhill Award – 2004

·         NCAA indoor All-American in 5,000 meters in 2004

·         Three-time outdoor All-American - 10,000 meters in 2003, 5000 meters in 2004 and 10,000-meter national champion in 2004


Joe David Smith (football)

·         1975, 1976 1st Team All-AIC

·         One of only two Harding players with 1,000 career rushing yards and 1,000 career receiving yards

·         Ranks third at Harding in career all-purpose yards (4,105), sixth in rushing yards (1,877), seventh in rushing touchdowns (15).

·         Ranked second in single-season all-purpose yards in 1976 (1,686).

·         Scored 13 touchdowns in 1976, tied for third in a Harding single season.

·         Led the AIC in rushing yards (999), receptions (44), and touchdowns (13) in 1976.

·         Played 42 games for the Bisons … 404 rushes for 1,877 yards and 15 TD … 83 receptions, 1,201 yards, 6 TD … 48 kickoff returns for 956 yards.
