AUSTIN, Texas – Texas A&M-Commerce made 79.2 percent of its shots in the second half and defeated Harding 82-67 on Sunday at the St. Edward's Classic. Harding will play host St. Edward's on Monday at 4 p.m.
There were 12 ties and 11 lead changes in the game, with the 12th tie coming on a dunk by Harding's DeAntra Scott that knotted the game at 54-54 with 8:10 left in the game. The Lions then went on a 17-3 run over the next 3 minutes, 41 seconds to take a 71-57 lead that Harding could not overcome.
Texas A&M-Commerce (4-6) shot 58.8 percent from the field and won its second straight game. It was the Lions' highest shooting percentage and the first time Harding allowed an opponent to shoot better than 50 percent this season. The Bisons entered the game as the top team in the Great American Conference in opponents' shooting percentage (39.5 percent).
Texas A&M-Commerce outscored Harding 52-37 in the second half.
Harding (4-4) lost its third straight despite sophomore Hayden Johnson's career-high 19 points and 17 points from junior Bradley Spencer. Johnson shot 7-of-10 from the field and made four 3-pointers for the first time in his career. Spencer made 6-of-7 free throws.
Scott scored 13 points off the bench and has scored 10 or more points in all eight of Harding's games.
Almost everyone shot well for Texas A&M-Commerce, who had five players in double figures. Reserve forward Preston Whitley led the Lions with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. He was also 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Senior guard Brad Hambrick scored 17 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Senior forward Desmond King scored 13 points and had seven of his team's 10 steals.
