PENSACOLA, Fla. – Lots of base runners, not enough runs.

16th-ranked Harding set a school record with 18 runners left on base and fell 5-4 in 11 innings to Nova Southeastern on Saturday at the NCAA II South Region Tournament. The loss ended the Bisons' season with an all-time best record of 42-14.

With one out in the 11th, Nova Southeastern's Carlos Asuaje singled to right with the bases loaded to score Sharad Johnson with the game-winning run. Johnson, who entered the game as a pinch runner in the eighth, doubled to lead off the 11th inning. It was only his third base hit of the season.

Harding had 16 hits in the game, including five in a three-run first inning. An RBI groundout from Jeremy Bohnett in the fourth put the Bisons ahead 4-1.

Nova Southeastern scored two in the third and one in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4.

Both teams had plenty of chances to score after that. Nova Southeastern had at least one runner on in every inning until Harding retired them three up, three down in the ninth to send the game into extra innings.

Harding left at least one runner on in every inning except the eighth. The Bisons left the bases loaded in both the sixth and tenth innings. Both times, Harding had the bases loaded and only one out but could not score.

Sophomore Logan Holthaus got the start for the Bisons and lasted 4 2/3 innings. He allowed seven hits and four runs (two earned) and struck out three. Junior Marc McRae (4-1) came on in relief with two out in the fifth and struck out Andrew Durden, Nova Southeastern's best hitter. He then pitched the next 5 1/3 innings and allowed only one hit, the double by Johnson. It was McRae's longest career outing. His previous high was 3 2/3 innings.

After McRae walked two batters intentionally to load the bases, senior Donny Stephens came on to pitch to Asuaje, who lined the game-winning hit to right.

Sean Albury (7-2) earned the win in relief for Nova Southeastern. He pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed only one hit and struck out four.

Harding was 5-for-23 in the game with runners in scoring position, and three of those hits came in the Bisons' first inning.

Jason Nappi was 4-for-6 for Harding, and Anthony Guglielmi was 3-for-5. Eight Bison starters had at least one hit and five had two hits or more.
