Former Harding Pitcher Ryder Yakel Signs with Mexican League’s Piratas de Campeche

SEARCY, Ark. — Former Harding University standout Ryder Yakel is taking his career south of the border, officially signing a professional contract Thursday with the Piratas de Campeche of the Mexican League (Liga Mexicana de Béisbol).

The signing marks a significant career milestone for the right-handed pitcher, moving him into Mexico's top professional circuit, which is classified as a Triple-A equivalent league by Major League Baseball.

Yakel, who pitched for the Bisons from 2019-2021, has steadily climbed the professional ranks since his collegiate days in Searcy. He spent the 2024 season with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the American Association, where he served as a key bullpen arm. In 31 appearances for Winnipeg, Yakel posted a 3.56 ERA and struck out 82 batters over 65.2 innings, showcasing the swing-and-miss stuff that first drew professional attention at Harding.

During his time at Harding, Yakel was a dominant force. He was named the 2021 Great American Conference Pitcher of the Year after posting a 6-2 record with six saves and a 2.95 ERA in his final season. He struck out 60 batters in 55 innings, helping anchor the Bisons' pitching staff.

After making his professional debut with the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League in 2021, Yakel spent time with the New York Boulders before his breakout stint in Winnipeg.

The Piratas de Campeche are based in Campeche City, Mexico, and play in the league's South Division. The LMB season typically runs from April through August.
