SEARCY – Northeastern State scored a pair of early goals and defeated the Harding men's soccer team 3-1 on Saturday at the Harding Soccer Field.
The RiverHawks (1-0-0), a Division II independent from Tahlequah, Okla., used a seventh-minute goal from Maxime Blanc and added another in the 16th minute from Andre Hernandez to build an early lead that they held until halftime.
Harding drew within one in the 66th minute as junior Josh Ireland scored his first goal of the season on a deflected shot that came off an assist from freshman Gehrig Haberstock. Northeastern State answered back less than five minutes later on a goal from Bo White in the 70th minute that put the game out of reach.
Harding (1-1-0), which won its opener 1-0 over Lynn on Thursday, played the last 10 minutes a man down after Haberstock was sent off for a tackle from behind.
Northeastern State outshot Harding 18-6, but Bison senior goalkeeper Zach Auala made 10 saves. It was the first time Harding keeper had 10 or more saves in a game since Andrew Flesher had 10 at Belhaven in 2009.
Harding will play the third game of a four-game home stand to open the season Tuesday when the Bisons host Maryville University of Missouri at 5 p.m.
